Rio Ferdinand’s Career and Foundation
Rio Ferdinand is known as one of the best English defenders of his generation. He began his career at West Ham United, rising through the youth system to become one of the Premier League’s standout players. His impressive performances earned him a record-breaking transfer to Leeds United in 2000, where he helped lead the team to the Champions League semi-finals. In 2002, Ferdinand made a high-profile move to Manchester United, where he had the most successful part of his career. Over more than a decade at Old Trafford, he won six Premier League titles and a Champions League, becoming a key figure in one of English football’s most dominant eras. He later joined Queens Park Rangers before retiring in 2015.
Off the pitch, Rio founded the Rio Ferdinand Foundation in 2012, inspired by his own experiences of inequality. The charity focuses on creating opportunities for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds, both in the UK and abroad. Working closely with local communities, the foundation helps young people build confidence, develop life skills, and gain access to education, training, and employment. With hubs across the UK and Ireland, it delivers programmes in sport, music, and the creative industries, promoting equality and empowering young people to reach their full potential.
