Saints grace Old Trafford in Super League Grand Final

St Helens head to the Theatre of Dreams this weekend, Old Trafford, for the Betfred Super League Grand Final against Salford Red Devils. They will be chasing their first Grand Final victory since 2014, and their fourteenth in total. It is sure to be a proud day for their loyal fans to see the famous Red Vee jersey grace the hallowed turf on Grand Final day.

Runaway Shield Winners

Saints were crowned League Leaders Shield winners 2019, running away with the competition after finishing the season 16 points ahead of runners up Wigan Warriors.  After winning the previous three matches against their derby rivals Wigan Warriors, the Saints battled it out to make it four, bagging themselves a place in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. The St Helens side has rampaged their way through the season to the first Super League Grand Final since 2014 when they championed over Wigan Warriors. After beating Wigan Warriors with a final score of 28-4, the Salford Devils are now all that stands in their way of becoming Super League champions 2019. All eyes will be firmly focused on Old Trafford at 6pm on Saturday.

Will the underdogs come out on top?

Saturday’s Final will be the 180th match of a season, with games played at Anfield and the Nou Camp, 440,154 metres covered, 113,275 tackles made, and 1,361 tries scored. The Salford Red Devils’ story showcases the remarkable transformation of rags to riches for Super League’s ‘misfits’ who came dangerously close to relegation at the end of last season. Salford were 150-1 outsiders to win the Grand Final at the start of the season, however, the odds now stand at 7/2. Now favourites for the final, they battle against the underdogs, St Helens, in the hope of winning their first title since 1976, in which they won the old Rugby League championship.

In the semi-final, Saints coasted home with tries from Fages, Naiqama, Thompson, Lomax, Taia, Percival (2) plus five conversions and a penalty from the metronomic boot of Lachlan Coote, leaving the final score 40-10. Salford’s win featured tries from Dudson, Lussick, Mossop with Krisnan Inu knocking over 16 points with his boot. With Saints’ try-scoring potential and Salford’s scoring record, Saturday’s match promises to be a cracker.

The Super League Grand Final on Saturday will be Justin Holbrook’s final match as coach for St Helens as he heads off to NRL next year to coach Gold Coast. Holbrook was crowned BetFred Coach of the Year at last weekend’s Super League's Award ceremony. Matty Lees was also chosen as the Young Player of the Year while Tommy Makinson was awarded top try scorer.
