The cheers of the Irish fans are sure to be heard around the world this week as the Ireland teams, both soccer and rugby, are in action on the world stage.
A cloud of green will fall upon the Stade de Geneve tonight as the Republic of Ireland take on Switzerland in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. The action will kick off at 7:45 pm and it’s sure to be a nail-biting 90 minutes.
Ireland are battling it out in Group D against Denmark, Switzerland, Georgia and Gibraltar for a place in the 16th UEFA European Championship, which starts next June. Irelands 0-0 draw against Georgia allowed Denmark to join them on top spot in the group after their 1-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday night. With Switzerland edging closer, Ireland’s manager Mick McCarthy stated at the pre-match press conference they are not set up for a draw in tonight’s match, instead looking for a win which will secure their lead over Switzerland on the table and qualification for next summers tournament.
David McGoldrick has been ruled out of tonight’s game due to injury after missing Saturday’s game against Georgia. McGoldrick saved the day back in September after scoring a late equalizer against Switzerland. After tonight’s game, Ireland only have one more game to prove their worth on Monday 18th November which they play at home in their beloved Aviva Stadium.

It has been a thrilling few weeks as fans around the globe tune in to watch the Rugby World Cup in Japan and we cheer on the boys in green. Ireland got off to a good start with a 27-3 win over Scotland, however, they may have got ahead of themselves then falling to defeat by hosts Japan. But they upped their game with two mighty performances against Russia and Samoa taking them into the Quarter Final.
Ireland will clash with New Zealand this coming Saturday the 19th of October, which is likely to be the team's biggest test yet. The match will take place in the Tokyo Stadium under the watchful eye of Welsh referee, Nigel Owens.
But some of New Zealand’s key players, including Beauden Barrett and Scott Barrett, will have gone 17 days without playing a game come Saturday’s match. They might be a bit rusty!
The team has suffered a devastating loss after Bundee Aki was slammed with a three-week ban (which would end his World Cup journey) as a result of the red card he received during the match against Samoa. Ireland will not decide whether they will appeal the ban or not until they receive the full written judgement. Who knows, Aki may make it back to fight off the All Blacks.
There is no room for mistakes on Saturday with an automatic end to the World Cup journey for the team who loses out. Ireland will be hoping they stop New Zealand becoming Rugby World Cup champions for the third time in a row. If the Ireland team triumph over the All Blacks, as they have done in recent times, they will progress to the semi-finals where they will then meet the winners of England v Australia who will play before the Ireland match on Saturday.
