O’Neills GAA jerseys have been spotted in some very unexpected places throughout the years. But it’s not just GAA fans who have been snapped in their O’Neills jersey, the celebrities are getting in on the action too!
Ed Sheeran and his Multicoloured Jerseys
Although Ed was born in England, he has strong Irish roots. The chart-topping sensation’s grandmother was from Wexford, so it wasn’t surprising when he stepped out in front of 80,000 fans in Croke Park wearing a personalised Wexford jersey. In 2018, he donned Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the Cork GAA jersey to the absolute delight of the 40,000 fans who watched on. Moving his tour onto Galway, he thrilled fans again wearing a Galway jersey while his single ‘Galway Girl’ echoed through Pearse stadium. But who could forget his cameo appearance in the movie Bridget Jones’s Baby, when he headlined Glastonbury in an O’Neills International Rules GAA jersey, flying the flag for Ireland on the big screen. It’s true, Ed loves Ireland.
Dublino for Coolio
Ed Sheeran isn’t the only familiar face to take an interest in the GAA, with the American rapper Coolio pulling on a retro 2007 Dublin GAA jersey in a bid to get Diarmuid Connolly back to help the Dublin team ‘drive for five’. He has since agreed to a show in County Tyrone, so when you are in the area Coolio, drop by and we’ll get you kitted out in a Tyrone jersey next time.
It’s Called Fashion
Offaly hurler turned model, Oisin Murphy, placed O’Neills GAA jerseys before an unusual audience. He appeared in the full Ruairi Og, Cushendall kit accompanied with a hurl and hurling helmet in an edition of Vogue Paris. GAA jerseys, they’re a fashion statement you know. First Vogue, next the catwalk.
GAA jerseys have made their fair share of appearances in the most unexpected places. You can always be sure to catch a glimpse of one during an international sporting event.
Kerry Take on the Masters…Again
In recent years, the Masters just wouldn’t be the same without the Kerry jersey making an appearance. It’s become a tradition. Stretching back to 2012, 16-year-old Hugh O’Keeffe began the craze pulling on the O’Neills Kerry jersey to represent the Kingdom over 3,000 miles away in Augusta, Georgia. Viewers this year didn’t just tune in to watch Tiger and Johnston battle it out, but also to take up the annual ‘Kerry spotting’, and it wasn’t long before they had a glimpse of green and gold, with not one but two Kerry jerseys spotted in the opening round in 2019.
A Flash of Green and Gold at the Ryder Cup
Kerry fans decided to branch out in 2018, making a special appearance at the Ryder Cup in France. Two fans were spotted sporting the green and gold jersey at the first hole, making sure to stand out from the crowd who were all dressed in blue and red to support team Europe of team America. Did you know the Kerry natives are fond of golf?
Offaly Aced It
More green and gold crept onto our screens at Wimbledon in 2017, but this time in the form of the Offaly jersey. The 1982 jersey was spotted amongst the crowd during Victoria Azarenka’s match against Heather Watson. The same man had previously been spotted proudly representing Offaly at the tournament back in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Keep an eye out for him next year!
Touchdown for Cavan
One of the biggest sporting events in the world and out of nowhere pops up a Cavan jersey to remind us that GAA is King of all football. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted the Cavan man amid the 2015 Superbowl where the New England Patriots went on to beat the Seattle Seahawks.
Snooker Spectators
Want to get on TV during a large sporting event? Just pull on your county colours and smile for the camera. As seen in the World Snooker Championships, snooker is no different with many Irish fans standing out in their GAA jerseys. Various counties have been represented throughout the years including Kerry, Roscommon, Mayo and even a retro Derry jersey making an appearance.
