Newry Town, City and AFC – 100 Years of Football

Newry Town, City and AFC celebrated 100 years of football by marking the occasion with centenary night in the Canal Court Hotel in November. 

Former Dundalk manager, current Republic of Ireland Under-21 boss and incoming Republic of Ireland Senior manager Stephen Kenny was special guest on the night with legendary commentator Jackie Fullerton acting as master of ceremonies.  

The night itself saw relatives of the very first Newry Town team from 1919 present while the County Antrim Shield-winning side of 1987, the players who guided Newry on their European run in the 1999 Intertoto Cup, plus the first ever squad of the newly-formed Newry City AFC were all involved.  

From its inception in the 1918-19 season, the club has gone through massive highs as well as some crushing lows. It has not only survived but continues to thrive as the biggest club in the Newry and Mourne area with ambitions of returning to the Premiership as soon as possible.  

Having earned a stunning four promotions in five seasons since reforming as Newry City AFC in 2013, the current team boast a side widely regarded as one of the best outside the top flight 

The centenary celebration was a night to remember with supporters, players both past and presentnotable managers and the huge number of volunteers that have made the club tick over the last 100 yearscoming together to celebrate great achievements and a magnificent milestone
