What a week in sport for the County. Full credit to the six teams involved for the superb entertainment, passion and skill they brought to a warm and sunny Croke Park.

It is unusual not to see Cork among the teams for Sunday but there is a great sense of anticipation around the game as Dublin and Mayo face off. The players in that Dublin jersey have been oh so close for each of the last three years, so will the absence of their great recent rivals Cork give them the chance to get over the line? Monkey off the back time? Last year Dublin pipped Mayo in the semi-final and the Westerners are no doubt spurred on by the memory of that heartbreaker and the harrowing defeat endured by the entire county last weekend. There’s nothing like a bit of Samba. If Gaelic football ever takes off in Brazil, we might have one person to thank. Amy Challoner is originally from Ireland and now lives in Hong Kong where she is involved with the GAA playing and coaching our games.
This summer, Amy visited Sao Paulo, Brazil, as part of a volunteer sports coaching project through an organization in Brazil called ACER. There, she coached Gaelic football to underprivileged children aged 7 - 15 from the surrounding areas.
Ahead of the trip, Amy got in touch with our export team at O’Neills to ask if we could provide some O’Neills children’s sized footballs to teach the children all about GAA.

Certainly the lads pulling on the Dublin jersey so brilliantly for the last four or five years have exhausted the dictionary of superlatives. When we’re old and grey and nodding by the fire, and the grandkids ask what the ancient sport of gaelic football was like in your day grandma/grandpa you can reply that you remember Dublin Football in the Rare Ould Times. We will also not forget a brilliant and brave Mayo team who firmly deserve their name on the Roll of Honour.
It’s a pity in a way that there isn’t a Champions League like

The Green and Red of Mayo has become an official unofficial army for the county so we can surely expect a new tune if it all comes to pass. No pressure on ye lads, but we fully expect the Saw Doctors to step up to the plate.

This much we know. Cork sealed their 27th All Ireland Camogie in frenetic style yesterday. God knows Julia White must have thought she would see no game time as the final ebbed into injury time. Five minutes that stretched into six. A draw seemed on the cards as the sliotar seemed to spend its time in the middle third for an eternity. Ruck, after turnover. Neither team seemed able to find the decisive space and time.
Injury time. Julia White knows all about it. In 2012 she was Cork skipper but a bout of illness meant she missed the All Ireland defeat to Wexford. An outstanding and pacy camogie player she featured strongly in 2015 as the Rebels defeated Galway but disaster struck and since then her camogie action has been severely curtailed with a torn Achilles followed by a broken foot. A few minutes here and there was all she could muster this summer.
But cometh the
This week sees the launch of our new NYPD GAA Ground Zero Commemoration jersey. The NYPD GAA club has a proud history dating back almost forty years since it was established by a small group of dedicated Gaels who were also serving officers in New York’s Finest. The jersey commemorates the 23 NYPD officers who tragically lost their lives on 11 September 2001 at Ground Zero.
The NYPD Gaelic Football Club was started in 1969 by a few Bronx policemen who were actively playing for their county teams in New York City. Mike Moloney from Clare, Dan Kiely from Cork, Galway native Mike Burke and Cavan‘s Mike Cassidy were the founders
Such scenes on the Croke Park pitch! It was just something else when Fergal Horgan blew his whistle and Joe Canning sank to his knees, with a primal roar that echoed through the Cusack Stand to the rafters. Galway GAA people in tears as the long 29 year wait for Liam McCarthy ended in style.
A thought for Waterford and their fantastic supporters, but kudos to Galway. It’s no coincidence they are known as the Tribesmen where its all about family and club connections. This year has been their year. No ifs and no buts this time around.
There were so many iconic moments in Croke Park, from Joe Canning standing tall with Shannon and Margaret Keady during David Burke’s tremendous speech. An emotional moment for all on a day when then legendary No 6 loomed large in the memory of everyone present.
