Sligo GAA - The Future is Black and White

Back in Black

Yes Sligo Black is back. We are proud to renew our association with Sligo GAA from the start of the 2017 season. The new Sligo GAA jersey features a red detail on the sleeves, dark grey shadow hoops and a Sligo crest on the lower back alongside the familiar title of the county motto drawn from WB Yeats play, The Land of Heart’s Desire. The Joe.ie sports department have already tipped it for jersey of the year!

A Warm Welcome

Welcoming the new partnership with O’Neills and thanking sponsors AbbVie and IT Sligo, Sligo GAA County Board Chairman Joe Taaffe said: “The Sligo County Board is deeply grateful to AbbVie for their continued financial support which in conjunction with our associate sponsor IT Sligo and our new kit provider O'Neill's is a fantastic combination for the coming year.

“I’d also like to compliment the company on their contribution to both the GAA community and the local economy. Their efforts ensure our children have an opportunity to acquire local jobs and in turn ensure they have an opportunity to participate in their local clubs.”

National League Debut

The new O’Neills Sligo GAA jersey takes its bow at the start of the national league on 5 February. They will line out against Armagh in the imposing and elegant black jersey. Black of course is the colour of sophistication, power and cool. Think judges, think All Blacks, think Johnny Cash - the man in black, AC/DC, the black belt.  Black has a psychological impact all of its own. A study of professional football and ice hockey teams in the USA wearing black gear showed they were more aggressive!

Sligo Snippets

Sligo were the nearly men of the Twenties when they reached the final of the All Ireland Football championship in 1922 and the national league in 1926. Due to objections, appeals and player eligibility rows, they were unable to contest either match. By our reckoning that makes them the only team to have qualified for two finals and not played in them.

The Future’s Here in Black and White

The growth of Ladies football in Sligo, since first organised in 1993, has been one of the recent success stories in the Yeats County. The Sligo women’s footballers lifted their first All-Ireland junior title in 2006. In the following year, Sligo’s senior men defeated Galway in the Connacht football final to win a third senior provincial title.

In 2008 the county’s hurlers added a Nicky Rackard Cup. Sligo is also on the radar for camogie to develop a series of new clubs according to their strategic plan.

The development of a major GAA Centre of Excellence in Scarden is both emblematic of the current health of the GAA in the county and a testimony to its future ambitions.

Scarden Centre of Excellence

Sligo GAA has been building steadily for the future through the efforts of its clubs and its supporters’ group, Club Sligo. The result has been the creation of €3m complex at Scarden which is now fully operational.

The 2017 Sligo GAA Jersey is now available in-store and online.
