  1. GAA Growing in USA and Canada

GAA Growing in USA and Canada

The GAA across North America has never been stronger with powerhouses in football in the major cities, and hurling as a sport also developing across Canada and the United States. The O’Neills jersey is a familiar sight among Irish communities and awareness is also growing among homegrown players who have less of a connection with Ireland.

Here are nine clubs and associations blazing a trail…

    New York GAA

Given the huge Irish connection in New York, Gaelic Games have always been an attraction and generations of students headed Stateside for the promise of some dollars, a job on a site and a weekend playing ball.

Did you know? New York GAA made history in 1947 when the All-Ireland football final was played at the

Official figures estimate that at any given time there are around 8600 people homeless in Ireland. By a rough estimate there are around 4500 players who pull on the jersey on senior inter county panels in hurling, football, ladies football and camogie. To understand the scale of the homeless issue in Ireland, if every single one of those players were homeless, if would only be equivalent to just over half of the number of people who live without a permanent home every day.

This weekend across Ireland we witnessed a remarkable display of solidarity and support as Current and former GAA county players staged a solidarity sleep out to raise awareness and funds for homeless people.

The initiative was led by the likes of Diarmuid Lyng, Gemma Begley, Eamon Fennell, Brendan Maher, and supported by players from every county. It was supported and driven by the GPA and the WGPA and volunteers were mobilised online to help raised funds and spread the word.

  3. Ireland’s Fittest Family Reaches its Climax

Ireland’s Fittest Family Reaches its Climax

The fifth series of Ireland’s fittest family continues this Sunday 10th December with the semi final, followed next week by the final. Fittest Family addicts can look forward to a Happy Christmas because there’s even a St Stephen’s day special just to give you guilt pangs about all that turkey.

So this weekend, the remaining families are back in Killary harbour for the semi-final where that bog looks tougher than ever before!! It’s a cold fjord to be hanging tough above too. But hey, if you’re one of Ireland’s fittest families that’s what Sunday evenings are all about.

The series has been going for a few years now, the brainchild of hurling legend Davy Fitzgerald. It combines reality TV with good old parochial pride and family spite. Add in a few of our well known celebrities barking a potent mixture of encouragement and well intentioned motivation just like the Sergeant Major in Full Metal Jacket, it has it all. “Gwan, Gwan, Gwan,

  4. Cora Staunton Australia Bound

    Cora Staunton Australia Bound

What We Do in Life Echoes In Eternity

The quote from Gladiator rings true when you think of Cora Staunton, one of the greatest players ever to pull on a Mayo LGFA jersey. Surely one of the best sportswomen this country has produced? Since 1996 Cora has scored a scarcely believable 59-483 in 67 championship games. Will her likes be seen again in terms of career longevity and scoring prowess? The stats are incredible. And by the way, although she’s Australia bound for a new adventure with GWS Giants AFLW team, she’ll be back in April to hook up with Mayo, again!

    Google her name:

“Cora Staunton scores 4-13 but Carnacon have to settle for a replay”

“Did she mean it? Cora Staunton lobs 6 players with close-range free”
